Renault has just announced that its Clio RS 220 Trophy pocket rocket has become the fastest B-segment car to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit.
It sits in the B-segment, which is the one underneath the C-segment's RenaultSport Megane RS, and the new Honda Civic Type R turbo.
Sport Auto magazine's editor Christian Gebhardt was behind the wheel when this ultimate of Clios lapped the infamous circuit in just 8 minutes and 32 seconds. This time makes it 3 seconds quicker than the previous B-segment champ, the Mini Cooper JWC, eight seconds better than GM's Opel Corsa OPC and puts it nine seconds ahead of the Audi S1.
The time is also particularly impressive as it is 36 seconds ahead of the 'regular' Clio RS 200 EDC and just 38 seconds behind the Mégane Trophy-R, the former world record holder for fastest front-wheel drive car around the 'Ring, prior to the Honda Civic Type R's run.
Power for the range-topping Clio comes courtesy of a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine delivering a total of 162kW and 260 Newton-Metres of torque. With a standard overboost function, that torque figure can reach 281 Nm for short periods.
The Clio RS can be seen at Euromarque, and you can drive away in your own Nürburgring-tamer from as little as $39,990.
